About the Item

Dutch Delft Blue & White Chinoiserie Punch Bowl with Floral Medallions Circa 1720 This Dutch Delft blue and white punch bowl is painted in a rich cobalt on the tin-glazed white ground with a chinoiserie design of floral medallions, dating from the height of the Delftware tradition. Below the rim, a continuous band carries six large circular medallions, each skillfully painted with a flowering plant, alternating with six panels of pendant fruit and blossom reserved against a deep blue ground, the stippled fruits picked out against the white. Below this main register the swelling body is decorated with a repeating series of stylized flower heads and foliage, and the bowl rises from a spreading circular foot. The interior is sparingly painted with a central sketch of two flowers growing among three plants, encircled higher on the wall by an airy border of alternating dots and circles. Delftware is tin-glazed earthenware made in imitation of the Chinese porcelain imported by the Dutch East India Company, and the decades around 1720 represent the peak of the industry’s skill and scale. Punch bowls were among the most sociable vessels of the eighteenth century: the mixing and serving of punch stood at the center of fashionable gatherings, and a large, elaborately decorated bowl was both a centerpiece and a statement of standing in an affluent Dutch household. The brilliance of the blue against the milky glaze makes this a superb example of early eighteenth-century Delft at its most confident. Condition: Good condition, with minor chips to the underside of the foot and light glaze flaking to the rim, as usual for tin-glazed earthenware of this date.
