About the Item

This is a twin boar handled open Bowl made by Mason's Ironstone in the rare Peacock, Peony and rock pattern, dating to the early / mid 19th century, circa 1835 to 1840.. Mason's bowls in this shape with the Boar or Pig side handles are rare. The bowl is circular on a low foot with two moulded animal head side handles in the shape of a pig or boar. The bowl is decorated in one of Masons rarely seen patterns called; Peacock, Peony and Rock which is a Chinoiserie themed pattern as illustrated on Page 122 of "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns" published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. The pattern is mainly hand-painted, both inside and outside the bowl, with typical bold and striking enamels using many different colours. The bowl carriers a Mason's round crown printed mark in black, dating it to the William 14th / Very early Victorian period.
