About the Item

Scale is the first impression. At over thirty inches in diameter, this 19th to early 20th century burl wood bowl commands space with its broad, shallow form hinting at a past life rooted in utility—perhaps in a dairy or cheese-making tradition. We've seen examples like this in both Sweden and France, though its exact origin is unknown to us. Carved from a single piece of burled wood, the surface is alive with whorled grain, knots, eyes, and swirling patterns that feel almost topographic. Time has deepened the patina into something rich and tactile, a finish no hand could convincingly replicate. There’s a groundedness here, a sense of purpose that lingers even as the bowl shifts into a more sculptural role. It reads as both artifact and object—substantial, elemental, and unapologetically present.
