About the Item

Clearly influenced by Matisse and other European modernists, this large and deep ceramic bowl with sgraffito decoration depicts a female nude and seated man amidst an array of floral motifs, ringed by a brilliant yellow aureole. The artist was Mary Erckenbrack, who lived a cosmopolitan existence in her early years, residing in Rio de Janeiro, France and England before studying in Paris and later under Alexander Archipenko. She operated a studio in San Francisco in the 1930s and her creations were sold at Gumps, Marshall Fields and shops in New York. This piece is especially large and bold.
