About the Item

Pair of French Grand Tour Patinated Bronze Tazzas with Siena Marble Bases, 1830s An elegant and architecturally refined pair of Grand Tour tazzas executed in richly dark-patinated bronze and raised on striking yellow Siena marble plinths, crafted in France during the late Empire period of the 1830s. These beautifully proportioned decorative vessels display a sophisticated neoclassical silhouette, with shallow circular bowls supported by finely cast pedestal stems and square marble socles. The scrolling handles are adorned with stylized floral and foliate ornamentation, while the bronze surfaces retain a deep, nuanced patina that contrasts beautifully against the warm golden tones and natural veining of the Siena marble. The restrained yet sculptural design reflects the transition from the pure Empire aesthetic toward the more romantic sensibility of the later Charles X period, while still maintaining strong classical inspiration drawn from antiquity. Objects such as these were closely associated with the Grand Tour tradition — the educational journeys undertaken by wealthy European travelers through Italy and the Mediterranean during the 18th and 19th centuries. Inspired by the archaeological discoveries of Pompeii and Herculaneum, Grand Tour objects brought the forms and ideals of classical antiquity into sophisticated European interiors. Tazzas of this type were prized as symbols of taste, learning, and refinement. A highly decorative and timeless pair, equally suitable for a mantelpiece, console, or library interior. Wear consistent with age and use.
