About the Item

A finely decorated Chinese famille rose porcelain bowl featuring a vibrant turquoise ground and hand-painted floral motifs. The bowl is adorned with lotus flowers and traditional symbols associated with longevity, prosperity, and good fortune, characteristic of “Mun Shou” or “Wan Shou” longevity bowls. Executed in the famille rose palette, the decoration displays soft enamel tones with delicate pink, green, yellow, and blue accents against the rich turquoise background. The intricate hand-painted details reflect the refined craftsmanship associated with Chinese export porcelain and the Jingdezhen kilns, long celebrated as the “Porcelain Capital of the World.” The bowl has an overglaze decoration, meaning it was fired twice. First, the ceramic body was fired at a high temperature. After that, it was painted with enamel or overglaze colors, and then fired again at a lower temperature to fix the decoration. The red stamp on the underside of the bowl indicates that the piece was made in Jingdezhen, China and is dated to the 1950s–1960s. This type of mark is commonly found on 20th-century porcelain and is often associated with production from Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province, a major historical center of Chinese porcelain making. The wording is typically understood as identifying the item as porcelain originating from this well-known region. An elegant decorative object and collectible piece of Chinese ceramic art, ideal for display in both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Qianlong period Canton Enamel Square Dish with Dragon, China Late 18th Century

Qianlong period Canton Enamel Square Dish with Dragon, China Late 18th Century

Located in Grythyttan, SE

This small and exquisite Chinese Canton Qianlong period enamel square dish features cut corners and is beautifully decorated with a five-clawed pink dragon surrounded by 18 blue ruyi clouds against a vibrant yellow background. The design is accented by two branches of peaches (or similar fruit) and two branches of peach blossoms (or other fruit blossoms), all framed by an intricate seaweed pattern border. In Chinese symbolism, five-clawed dragons are reserved exclusively for emperors, as the number five is considered sacred, representing the five elements. In contrast, four-clawed dragons are associated with kings, princes, and high-ranking officials, while three-clawed dragons are designated for the merchant class. This piece is crafted from enamel on brass, dating back to the Qianlong period (1736–1795), and is characterized by its hexagonal form and the distinctive Famille Rose palette, often referred to as "Canton enamel." Chinese painted enamel, commonly known as Canton enamel, derives its name from its principal manufacturing location, Canton. This technique was introduced to China in the 18th century, likely by French missionaries, and is inspired by the enameling techniques developed in Limoges, France around 1470. It is referred to in China as "foreign porcelain," suitable since much of it was made for export. During the 18th and 19th centuries, there was significant demand in the West for Chinese porcelain dinner sets...
