About the Item

Gilbert Portanier’s “Liguria” porcelain wall plate for Rosenthal Studio-Line turns a functional form into a richly layered ceramic artwork. Abstract and biomorphic motifs in red, blue, green and ochre move across a charcoal-grey ground, creating a dense, rhythmic composition with a distinctly Mediterranean character. Measuring 28,5 cm in diameter, the piece has the scale and depth of a large shallow bowl. Its dark ground gives the colours unusual intensity and sets “Liguria” apart from Portanier’s lighter Rosenthal collections. Integrated hanging holes on the reverse allow it to be securely displayed as wall art. It may also be presented horizontally on a table, console or pedestal using a suitable stand. The display stand shown is not included. “Liguria” is one of Portanier’s principal named collections for Rosenthal Studio-Line, alongside “Alta Mira” and “Le Midi.” The series reflects his characteristic fusion of painterly abstraction, symbolic imagery and ceramic form. Examples have appeared at European decorative-arts auctions, while his wider collaboration with Rosenthal was represented in the 2024–2025 retrospective Le chemin du rêve at the Musée Magnelli in Vallauris. Gilbert Portanier (1926–2023) was a French ceramic artist closely associated with Vallauris. After studying architecture in Paris, he turned to ceramics in the late 1940s and co-founded the Atelier du Triptyque in 1949. His work is distinguished by vivid colour, expressive drawing and an imaginative visual language rooted in Mediterranean culture.

This large Rosenthal porcelain bowl features the celebrated Florence décor, a vivid radial composition set against a luminous sky-blue ground. Turquoise, pink, black and white motifs extend from the centre toward the rim, giving the bowl the graphic energy and colour confidence associated with Emilio Pucci’s fashion designs. With its wide 31.5 cm diameter and low 5 cm profile, the piece has strong visual presence without feeling heavy.
