About the Item

Made circa 1810, this pair of neoclassical Spode porcelain plates is distinguished by its saturated cobalt blue ground, sharply scalloped outlines, and confident use of burnished gilding. At the center of each plate, a finely drawn gilt rosette in the anthemion form sits within a toothed gilt border. This creates a strong visual focus that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding white reserve. The rims are molded with a sculptural gadrooned edge, then fully gilded, allowing light to catch along the raised contours and emphasize the precision of the modeling. The balance between the deep blue field, crisp white center, and restrained but assertive gilding reflects Spode’s mastery during the early Regency period, when the factory’s feldspathic porcelain was setting a new standard for English production. Dimensions: 9.75 inches diameter Condition: Very good, with light expected wear to the gilding consistent with age Price: $380 Decoration: Cobalt blue ground with burnished gilt borders and central anthemion rosette Material: Porcelain Style: Regency, Neoclassical Origin: England Date: Circa 1810 Notable Details: • Early Spode feldspar porcelain • Deep cobalt blue ground with heavy burnished gilding • Gadrooned and scalloped rim • Classical anthemion form central medallion • Strong Regency-period proportions
