About the Item

A rare and substantial ashtray from the "Atom" series, designed by Hans Theo Baumann for Glashütte Süssmuth, Germany, circa 1968–1970. This example appears to be an uncommon variant: the large format of the series, with three cigarette rests cut into the rim and a silvered interior — a treatment we have not found documented on other known examples, which typically appear in plain smoked crystal. Sourced in Germany. The heavy hand-blown crystal body carries a smoked grey band above a mirror-silvered lower section, applied to the interior of the glass. The signature feature of the series sits in the base: a suspended hourglass air bubble, blown into the thick glass from below. Viewed from beneath, the base reveals three concentric circles converging on the bubble — the "atom" that gives the series its name, and a construction technique of notable sophistication, comparable to work by Steuben in the same period. Hans Theo Baumann (1924–2016) was among the most significant German industrial designers of the postwar era, creating ceramics and glass for Rosenthal, Arzberg, KPM, Thomas, Schönwald, and Süssmuth. A founding member of the Association of German Industrial Designers (VDID) and its president until 1970, his work is held in the Neue Sammlung Munich, the Vitra Design Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and was honored in Germany's 2017 "Design aus Deutschland" postage stamp series. Equally at home as a functioning ashtray, a catchall, or a purely sculptural object, the mirror finish animates any surface it sits on. Unmarked, as typical for this series; attribution based on documented "Atom" series examples. In good vintage condition. No chips, no cracks, no spidering to the silvering. Light scratches to the silvered interior surface consistent with age; two small internal marks within the glass wall original to production. Gentle cleaning only recommended — avoid abrasive contact with the silvered interior.
