Antique Vanity Box in Coromandel by Jenner & Knewstub

This wonderful Victorian dressing case, coromandel veneered with smart brass edging and inlay, dates from the early 1860s. It was made by Jenner & Knewstub, respected makers to Queen Victoria. The ornate brass side handles are beautifully flush-mounted. The box bears its original owner's monogram - 'I.N.' - engraved into a brass shield and set into the lid. The contents of the dressing case are exquisite: thirteen beautifully hobnail cut glass jars and bottles with silver-gilt lids. The bottles and jars were designed to store all sorts of ladies necessities such as perfumes, salts, powders, and sponges. The lids of the bottles and jars are engraved with intricate patterns and flourishes that swirl around the 'I.N.' monogram. The quality of engraving is outstanding. Every item of silver is hallmarked 'London 1862' and attributed to the highly respected silversmith James Vickery. Sat in the lid is a stunning gilded mirror; the frame is as intricately and beautifully engraved and monogrammed as the bottles and jars. The mirror can be removed from the lid, and, with its velvet-backed stand, used as a dressing table mirror. To the front of the box's main compartment, there are two brooch or hairpin cushions, made from blue velvet (the same luxurious velvet used to line the majority of the interior). A push button to the front rim releases and drops forward the front flap of the box. This reveals a flush brass handle which pulls out a velvet-lined drawer. This at first glance is the box's only drawer, but Jenner & Knewstub, skilled craftsmen as they were, incorporated another three ingeniously concealed secret drawers... At the back of the main compartment is a gilded maker's plate, engraved with 'Jenner & Knewstub - To the Queen - 33 St James's Street and 66 Jermyn Street'. The right-hand screw appears to secure the maker's plate, but it is in fact a dummy screw, a push button which pops open a hidden drawer just above the bottom drawer. This beautifully partitioned and velvet-lined drawer would have been used to hide its owner's most valuable jewelry. There are two concealed buttons in the floor beneath the rear perfume bottles. Pressing these buttons releases two small secret drawers to the left and right sides of the bottom drawer. The cleverly hidden secret drawers, the exquisitely engraved silverware, the unusual rectangular proportions and the smart brass handles, makes this an extremely rare dressing case of the highest quality possible.
