About the Item

Here is a striking and highly collectible Art Deco “Cleopatra” box produced by General Electric, circa 1933. This iconic Machine Age design exemplifies early American industrial modernism, combining a sculptural black phenolic (Bakelite) base with a vivid red Plaskon lid—an innovative pairing that reflects GE’s pioneering use of early plastics. The form is quintessentially Streamline Moderne, with a radiating, stepped base and a fan-like lid that evokes both speed and stylized Egyptian revival motifs. The bold geometry and contrasting materials create a dynamic, architectural presence, making this piece as much a small sculpture as it is a functional vanity or trinket box. Often associated with the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, this design captures the forward-looking optimism of the era and remains one of the most recognizable early plastic designs produced by General Electric. Condition is very good, with no cracks or repairs. There there may be light surface wear consistent with age and use, but the piece presents beautifully with strong color and crisp form. A superb example of early American Art Deco design and a standout addition to any collection of Bakelite, industrial design or 1930s decorative arts.
