About the Item

An early 19th century French boite à sel, or salt box from Provence hand-crafted from solid walnut with a tall back panel and hand-carved decorative trim. Sloping hinged lid designed for storing coarse salt (gros sel) and a small bottom drawer with turned knob, traditionally used for fine table salt (sel fin) or valuable pepper and spices. Waxed finish. Unusually large size. In very good condition with two minor losses. These functional folk art pieces hung on the kitchen wall. Circa 1800-1820
