About the Item

German 800 silver figural box, ca 1910. Equestrian figure in style of 17th century. A mounted rider with sword at hip feathered hat, pointed beard, and lace collar, points in the distance while sitting astride richly caparisoned and harnessed horse with raised forelegs. The representation is a composite of painted portraits of Charles I by Van Dyck, who depicted the tragic king as a man of style and swagger. Charles was beheaded in 1649. Appropriately, the rider’s head is detachable as is the horse’s. Double domed base with crimped rims; chased flowers and leafing scrollwork with applied lizard, frog, and turtle. Marks include fineness stamp and Hanau maker’s stamp (JD Schleissner & Söhne). Weight: 67.3 troy ounces.
