About the Item
Circa 1920 · Wood, brass hardware, interior metal tray. Someone painted with this box. That's the first thing the interior says when it's opened. The oil paint stains on the wood are not damage: they are the record of work. Blue, green, orange, ochre — the remnants of palettes that existed, of paintings that were finished or weren't, of afternoons with enough light and a brush in hand. The inside of the lid is, in itself, an accidental painting.
The exterior tells a different story: that of an object built to last. The fine-grained, warm-toned wood has arrived here with the dignity of something that was made well. The brass hardware — the arched handle, the diamond-shaped keyhole escutcheon, the side clasps — retains its form and function, carrying the patina that only honest use can give.
The interior metal tray, designed for mixing colors, bears its own marks: rust, pigment, time. The side channels of the box, built to carry canvases or panels, complete the system of an object that was a tool before it became a relic.
A box that went out into the field. That saw natural light. That came back.
