About the Item

Saleron is the traditional Queyras salt shaker. This box, made of cembro pine, was crafted in Saint-Véran, Europe's highest village, perched at an altitude of 2042 meters in the French Alps. In the past, the saleron was used to store salt, a precious commodity in our mountains. To protect it from humidity, the idea was born of making these salt boxes from wood, with sliding lids. The wood absorbs humidity and prevents the salt from getting "wet". This hand-carved object still retains its gouge marks, giving it a brutalist feel. The Cembro pine from which these traditional boxes are made is the most cold-resistant tree found at altitudes of up to 2300m. On the other hand, it grows very slowly. This tree can reach 600 years of age. Good condition. Shipping: 10 / 13 / 17 cm 0.5 kg.
