About the Item

An extraordinary pair of large-scale Chinese cloisonné enamel covered boxes, dating to the late Qing Dynasty, late 19th century, each modeled as an exuberant head of cabbage and measuring approximately 17 inches across. The deeply scalloped leaves are articulated with exceptionally dense hand-applied cloisonné wirework and richly shaded enamels ranging from pale celadon and apple green to deeper emerald tones. The overlapping leaves give the boxes a remarkably sculptural quality, while each removable cover is finished with a simple forged copper stem pull. Finding a single is rare, but finding a matched pair is nearly impossible. Fresh from an old Virginia estate. At 17 inches across, these are unusually large examples. Their combination of meticulous traditional craftsmanship, monumental scale and playful botanical form gives them a surprisingly modern decorative presence. Displayed together, they function as much as sculpture as they do decorative boxes and would make a remarkable pair of centerpieces on a dining table, console or center table. The theatrical use of scale, color and naturalistic form recalls the exuberant interiors associated with Alberto Pinto, Tony Duquette and Bunny Williams, while the cabbage motif has a wonderful affinity with the celebrated lettuce ware of Dodie Thayer. These references are aesthetic rather than attributions, but illustrate how naturally the pair bridges traditional Chinese decorative arts and sophisticated modern interiors. Finding a single large cloisonné cabbage-form covered box is unusual; finding a matched pair of this monumental 17-inch scale is considerably more exceptional. China, late Qing Dynasty, late 19th century.
