About the Item

A small and beautiful Art Deco lidded pewter box with amazing patina. Made by Holger Fridericia, Denmark, 1920s. Good original condition, with some light scratches and scuffs. Stamped with makers mark. Holger Fridericia was a Danish manufacturer and retailer of decorative metalwork whose name became closely associated with high-quality bronze objects produced in Copenhagen during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The business was founded by merchant Holger Fridericia in 1879 and was based at Store Kongensgade in central Copenhagen. Originally established as a wholesale firm, the company expanded into the production and sale of artistic bronze wares, developing a reputation for finely cast decorative objects that reflected the changing tastes of the Art Nouveau and later Art Deco periods. In 1902 the business continued under the name Holger Fridericia's Eftf. ("Holger Fridericia's Successors") after being taken over by Alfred Moritz Salomonsen, ensuring that the well-known trade name remained in use for decades. The company is best known today for its patinated bronze bowls, vases, dishes, sculptures, bookends, and decorative table objects, many of which were produced during the 1920s and 1930s under the H.F. Bronze mark. These pieces often display the streamlined forms and stylized ornament characteristic of Danish Art Deco, while some also reveal the influence of contemporary designers such as Just Andersen through their rich green and brown patinas and sculptural modelling. Although Holger Fridericia's workshop rarely identified individual designers, its products were distinguished by their high-quality casting and artistic finishes, making them popular both in Denmark and abroad. Today, bronze objects bearing the Holger Fridericia or H.F. Bronze mark are highly regarded by collectors of Scandinavian decorative arts. Their combination of skilled craftsmanship, elegant proportions, and distinctive patinated surfaces places them among the finest examples of Danish decorative metalwork from the first half of the twentieth century, representing an important chapter in Denmark's rich tradition of artistic bronze production.
