About the Item

A substantial Venetian Renaissance Revival carved walnut Bible casket or document chest, likely northern Italian, circa 1880–1920, the hinged lid centered by a deeply carved winged Lion of Saint Mark holding the open Gospel inscribed “Pax Tibi Marce Evangelista Meus,” the traditional motto of Venice translating to “Peace to you, Mark, my evangelist.” The scale and form suggest use as a Bible box, Gospel casket, document chest, or presentation box, rather than a small keepsake casket. The case is constructed with warm walnut panels framed by darker ebonized moldings, raised on small turned feet and fitted with a front lock, while the sides are carved with Renaissance Revival scrollwork, punched grounds, geometric ornament, and architectural paneling. The subject matter directly associates the piece with Venice and the historic emblem of the Venetian Republic, giving it strong decorative and symbolic presence.
