About the Item

A rare and characterful Vienna Secession wooden box, executed in Austria circa 1900. The piece reflects the movement’s distinctive synthesis of stylization and symbolism, combining geometric restraint with expressive natural motifs. The rectangular casket is finished in a deep blue ground and richly adorned with carved and polychrome-decorated relief panels. Each side presents a carefully composed motif—stylized birds, floral garlands, and a basket of roses—rendered in muted tones with gilt highlights. The ornamentation is structured yet lyrical, aligning with the Secessionist departure from historicism toward a more abstracted and rhythmic interpretation of nature. The lid is crowned by a sculptural cat in an arched posture, its elongated limbs and simplified modeling lending it a subtly modern, almost graphic quality. This finial introduces a symbolic and slightly playful element, consistent with the Secession’s interest in allegory and expressive form. Raised on small bun feet, the box maintains a strong architectural presence, while the textured surfaces and softened polychromy speak to its age and authenticity. The combination of geometry, surface treatment, and stylized decoration places the piece firmly within the Vienna Secession context, closely related to the broader artistic environment surrounding the Wiener Werkstätte.
