ABOUT: WMF - Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik: History In 1853, Daniel Straub, a miller from Geislingen, partnered with the Schweizer brothers to establish "Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer" in Geislingen. This was Straub's second venture; in 1850, he had founded Maschinenfabrik Geislingen from a small repair workshop he had created while working on Geislingen's renowned railway incline. This company primarily manufactured mill turbines and conducted business across Europe. By 1862, the young company had already made a mark by winning a gold medal at the World Exhibition in London. In 1866, after the departure of Louis and Friedrich Schweizer, the company was renamed "Straub & Sohn" (Straub & Son). The company showroom, established in Berlin in 1868, gradually evolved into its first retail outlet. By 1871, the company employed 60 workers. By 1880, the workforce had grown to about 200, and the company was producing 960 different items. In 1880, Straub & Sohn merged with "Ritter & Co." from Esslingen to form a public limited company named Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik. At the time of the merger, Ritter & Co.'s Esslingen factory was already utilizing the electroplating method of silver plating and had more modern production facilities, while Straub's company was the more profitable of the two.
