About the Item

A late Victorian Gothic Revival olivewood and banded agate jewellery box with brass mounts. Circa 1880. Veneered in highly figured olivewood, the brass decoration is enriched with intricate engraved scrollwork, framed by a minuscule rope twist border encircling the polished banded agate cabochons. Overall, the exterior is in excellent original condition with a wonderful patina, showing light marks consistent with age. There is a small mark to the black velvet interior to note. Originally conceived as a scent bottle box, the piece retains its purple velvet upper lining. The interior's base has been sympathetically adapted with padded black velvet so that it may now serve as an elegant jewellery box. A working key accompanies the lock. The interior edging is finished in macassar ebony, offering a refined contrast to the honeyed tones of the olivewood. Delivery included to the UK.
