About the Item

Outstanding and highly refined Tahan Paris collector's box, crafted from ebony and rosewood with floral brass marquetry. Originally a glove box, this collector's box can now serve any purpose, including as a jewelry box. With a rectangular profile, the exterior is made of ebony and the interior of rosewood. It is adorned with brass inlays and exquisitely detailed marquetry of great precision and symmetry on the ebony top, following a pattern of four-leaf clovers. Its polished finish exudes timeless luxury. The inlaid brass outlines a cartouche on the front, highlighting the importance of its design and directing the eye to the prestigious signature: "TAHAN, PARIS." The original key is included, with a functional locking mechanism that elegantly secures the box. Tahan Jean Pierre Alexandre (1813-1892) was a renowned Parisian cabinetmaker and craftsman, famous for having been appointed cabinetmaker to Emperor Napoleon III. From 1849 to 1866, he had his workshop on the Rue de la Paix in Paris, and later on the Boulevard des Italiens. He received medals at several Universal Expositions. His cabinetmaking and furniture pieces were coveted by Parisian high society. Currently, these pieces are highly sought after in the art market and often fetch high prices.
