About the Item

A Fine Georgian Dome-Top Tea Caddy. A beautifully preserved Georgian period single–compartment tea caddy, veneered throughout in richly figured tortoiseshell with a striking mottled pattern in warm amber and chocolate tones. The caddy features a domed lid, opening to reveal a red velvet–lined interior and a matching tortoiseshell inner lid fitted with its original turned bone knop. The exterior is trimmed with delicate ivory edging (now aged to a soft cream tone), and retains its oval silver cartouche and silvered key escutcheon, typical of late 18th- to early 19th-century English craftsmanship. The caddy stands on four turned ivory button feet, giving the piece an elegant lift and balance. This type of small, domed tortoiseshell caddy was produced in specialist workshops in London and Birmingham around 1785–1810, where the finest shell veneers were hand-selected and applied over shaped wooden carcases. A refined and highly collectible example of Georgian luxury tea equipage. Circa 1800 English Condition: Very good; minor surface wear consistent with age. Shell retains its depth and translucency. Interior velvet original but worn in places. The Tea Caddy comes complete with a working lock and key.
