About the Item

A pair of spectacular and prominent antique French Empire-style figural patinated and gilt bronze candelabra. Each candelabrum takes the form of a fully modeled winged female figure, standing upright with both arms extended to support scrolling branches terminating in four candleholders. The figures are cast in dark patinated bronze, their garments arranged in vertical folds, while the outstretched arms bear gilt bronze branches shaped as stylized oil lamps with floral ornament and four nozzles each. The figures stand poised atop gilt bronze spheres decorated with applied foliage. The bases are constructed from squared sections of richly colored marble, mounted with gilt bronze reliefs. Each base displays alternating plaques of draped classical maidens pouring from amphorae and lyres framed with laurel branches. The upper edges are enriched with applied gilt bronze garlands, while the bases are framed with a gilt bronze leaf-tip border and rest on toupie feet. The combination of patinated bronze figures, gilt bronze mounts, and variegated marble provides a strong contrast of surfaces. These candelabra are executed in the Empire style, which favored figural representations of classical deities and allegories paired with luxurious materials such as gilt bronze and marble. The use of winged female figures as structural supports, together with the recurring motifs of lyres and garlands, connects these pieces to the decorative vocabulary of early 19th-century French bronziers. Their size and construction suggest they were intended as important decorative lighting fixtures within an interior of high status.
