About the Item

German 19th century giltwood chandelier for burning taper candles, untouched by the modern convenience of electricity as a delightfully analog source of light. This elegant design from circa 1820 incorporates First Empire and Neoclassical foliate imagery that gives a vitality to the carvings, flattered by the warm aura of candlelight. Chains descending from the small canopy surround a central column (resembling a fountain) which projects up from the center of the bowl that radiates with acanthus leaves. Four scrolled arms swell with little flowers and seed pods as they rise into the boboches like blooming flowers. Areas of loss to the gilding and patinated oxidation of the metal does not diminish the magnificent quality of the chandelier. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. Please view the detailed image gallery for the current condition and message us with any questions. Canopy: 4 ½” diameter
