About the Item

A rare German late Gothic brass candlestick (Spulenleuchter), dating to around 1500. This finely crafted piece features a broad circular base with a gently sloping profile, supporting a turned stem with pronounced baluster-shaped rings. The socket is fitted with a rectangular ejector hole, a characteristic detail of Gothic candlesticks that allowed spent candle stubs to be removed with ease. The brass shows a rich, timeworn patina with traces of oxidation and wear consistent with age, enhancing its authentic presence. Such candlesticks were used in both domestic interiors and ecclesiastical settings, reflecting the late medieval transition toward more functional yet elegant lighting design. This example stands as a remarkable survival from the late Gothic period, offering both historical significance and sculptural beauty. It would make an exceptional addition for collectors of early metalwork or medieval decorative arts.
