About the Item

A highly decorative Belgian giltwood and gesso candlestick dating to circa 1900, distinguished by its elaborate carving, sculptural proportions and beautifully aged gilded surface. Standing approximately 63 cm high, the piece has an impressive architectural form. The tall shaped stem is enriched with scrolling acanthus ornament, beaded mouldings and classical detailing, while the central section features an unusually attractive arrangement of carved fruit and foliage. Below, the substantial pierced base is decorated with further foliate scrollwork and floral motifs, terminating in three shaped feet. Originally conceived as a candlestick, the piece was subsequently adapted for use as a lamp stand. It is currently offered without electrical wiring, allowing it to be displayed as a decorative candlestick or professionally rewired and converted into a distinctive table lamp. The gilt surface has developed an attractive antique patina, with rubbing, minor losses, surface variation and other signs of age that complement its decorative character. Found in Belgium, it is a particularly striking example of late 19th- to early 20th-century European decorative craftsmanship. With its substantial scale and richly ornamented silhouette, this piece would work beautifully within a traditional, maximalist or eclectic interior, whether displayed as an altar-style candlestick, architectural decorative object or converted lamp base.
