About the Item

"Cupid & The Torchbearer": Pair of Neale & Co. Pearlware Figural Candlesticks Early 19th Century A charming and well-modeled pair of English pearlware pottery candlesticks, dating to the turn of the 19th century. Attributed to Neale & Co., these polychrome figures depict standing putti or cherubs, each supporting a leaf-molded candle nozzle upon their head. The Archer (Cupid): Stands holding a bow in his left hand, with a quiver of arrows strapped across his back. The Torchbearer: Holds a flaming torch across his body, often symbolic of Hymen (marriage) or enlightenment. Both figures are draped in sashes painted in soft pink and green enamels and feature distinctively modeled wings picked out in purple/puce. They stand upon raised square plinths decorated with molded fluting in green and bordered in brown line detailing. Markings: Each base is marked with two brown dabs (painter's marks). Impressed numbers (mold numbers) to the underside. Measurements: Height: 9 1/4 inches (23.5 cm) Base: 3 1/4 inches square (8.3 cm) Historical Context: Neale & Co. (active in Hanley, Staffordshire) was known for producing high-quality earthenware figures that rivaled the refinement of Wedgwood. These candlesticks reflect the transition in Staffordshire figure making from the rustic "Whieldon" styles to the brighter, neoclassical pearlware bodies of the early 19th century. The pairing of Cupid (love) and the Torchbearer (often associated with Hymen, the god of marriage) was a popular allegorical theme in Georgian decorative arts, symbolizing the union of love and marriage.
