About the Item

Pricket candlesticks represent one of the earliest forms of candle holder, distinguished by a central spike used to secure the candle in place. Before the widespread adoption of socket-mounted candlesticks, prickets were commonly found in churches, manor houses, and other grand interiors. Their simple functionality and striking silhouette led to a revival of the form during the Gothic Revival and Arts and Crafts movements, when designers embraced medieval precedents and traditional hand-forged craftsmanship. Description This handsome pair of wrought iron pricket candlesticks features sturdy tripod bases supporting twisted openwork "cage" stems. Each candlestick is fitted with a dished drip tray and retains its central spike, designed to hold candles in the traditional pricket manner. Their sculptural form draws inspiration from medieval ecclesiastical ironwork, reflecting the enduring appeal of Gothic Revival design and the Arts and Crafts appreciation for honest materials and skilled craftsmanship. The hand-forged character and architectural presence of these candlesticks allow them to complement both period settings and contemporary interiors, where their dramatic simplicity remains as relevant today as when they were first made.
