About the Item

A Very Unusual and Quite Rare 19th Century French brown and green Patinated Bronze & Ormolu Mounted Rouge Marble Clock Garniture. This three-piece garniture set, comprising a central mantel clock and a pair of matching tazze, is executed in patinated bronze, ormolu, and rouge griotte marble. The clock features a round dial with Roman numerals, framed by grapevine motifs and surmounted by a sculptural arrangement of musical instruments, a drinking vessel, and a wreath. The tazze each incorporate a tiered design with perched vultures, flanked by decorative ormolu elements. The structure is anchored by robust, paw-footed bases adorned with ormolu masks and acanthus scrolls. The clock rests on a substantial marble plinth, flanked by reclining bronze panthers, with cascading grape clusters applied throughout. The tazze feature a similar motif, with their upper platforms edged by Greek key borders and topped with fluted finials. The ormolu accents provide contrast against the verdigris patina and deep red marble. This garniture is extraordinarily rare. The entire construction of the pieces is highly detailed and very masterfully done. Each section of bronze is exceptionally cast, hand-chassed, and hand-worked. The bronze mounts are also either finely gilt or patinated. The rare rouge marble body is all hand-carved and hand-polished with meticulous detail. This is absolutely a masterpiece object and the only one we have seen like it in over 5 generations of working with art and antiques. France, Circa: 1870

19th Century, French Gilt Bronze and Marble Mantel Clock Garniture Set

A refined French mantel clock garniture set executed in gilt bronze and white stone, dating to the 19th century. The ensemble consists of a central pendulum clock accompanied by a matching pair of decorative urns. The architectural composition with classical columns reflects the neoclassical taste characteristic of French decorative arts of the period. The clock features an enamel dial with black numerals and finely shaped hands, housed within a cylindrical case suspended between two columns. The case is adorned with cast gilt bronze mounts incorporating floral and classical decorative motifs, while the pendulum is decorated with a sun mask motif. The accompanying urns echo the design language of the clock, combining white stone bodies with gilt bronze mounts and twin handles, creating a balanced three-piece composition suitable for mantel or console display. Attribution and dating remain based on stylistic characteristics visible in the set. The exact stone type has not been professionally tested. Dimensions Clock: Height: 43 cm / 16.9 in Width: 24 cm / 9.45 in Depth: 12 cm / 4.72 in Urns (each): Height: 31 cm / 12.2 in Width: 14 cm / 5.5 in Depth: 11 cm / 4.33 in Condition Very good antique condition for its age. Minor chips on the stone bases, visible on corners of each piece Small crack on the back of the clock base (visible in photos) Gilt bronze shows natural age-related patina and tonal variations The front glass is missing The mechanism has been started and tested over several days, during which the clock ran consistently and kept operating. The striking function does not currently activate. The movement appears complete and remains in very good visual condition; however, as with all antique clocks...
