About the Item

A very fine and elegant fire-gilt bronze mantel clock in the Romantic taste. The base rests on scrolling feet connected by leafy volutes centered with a female mask beneath a decorated frieze with animal heads at the corners. The pedestal is adorned with a central flower basket held by birds of paradise between flowering scrolls and finished with an egg-and-dart frieze. The clock is surmounted by an elegantly dressed lady seated on a cushioned chair with a footstool, holding a theatrical script entitled La Chercheuse d'Esprit, Acte II. France, circa 1820-1840. The case is finely executed in mercury fire-gilt bronze with 24-carat gold, displaying the characteristic contrast between burnished and matte surfaces. This traditional gilding technique is no longer practiced due to the health risks associated with the mercury used during the process. Measurements Height: 45 cm. Weight: 8 kg.
