About the Item

A very unusual French Empire Genre Arcadian mantel clock of a hunting scene. The primary subject is that of a finely dressed woman in riding habit, hat, whip and gloves riding side saddle on a fine patinated bronze hunter. A young boy is leading the horse on a bridle through a farm gate. In front of the clock housing is a horse trough and to the left a magnificently highly stylised tree. The base has canted corners and stands upon four fine toupee feet. To each side of the base is an applied ormolu mount of trees. To the front of the base is a superb mount in high relief showing a hunting scene with trees to the left, a dismounted horse belonging to the hunt master who holds aloft a fox above the pack of baying hands. To the right the woman on the horse can be seen holding her whip and standing next to another gentleman while a groom holds their horses. The clock is held in a vertical rectangle of ormolu with an applied mount of a stag to the left hand side and that of a doe to the right. The top of the clock is surmounted by a superb ormolu urn. The convex dial is white enamel on copper and the hour markers are Roman numerals. The movement of small size is of eight day duration and is regulated by a silk suspended pendulum. The clock strikes the hours and halves on a cast bell by means of a count wheel. I have never seen this model before, nor have I seen it illustrated. However a smaller clock of a hunter illustrated in Elke Niehuser's book "French Bronze Clocks" illustrates a clock with so many similar features it has to have been made by the same hand and/or designer pp.169 ill 271.
