About the Item

A fine early 19th century French Empire gilt bronze clock representing an allegory of astronomy; featuring two classically draped maidens standing on either side of a pedestal containing the clock movement which is surmounted by a celestial globe sitting on a doric fluted column. The crossed legs of the two maidens is a common pose in antiquity and both are a mirror image. Both figures are focused on studies. Two sphinxes carry the dial on their backs; the gilded frieze of putti holding astronomical instruments is in the style of Clodion.
