About the Item

A handsome French neoclassical mantel clock retailed by Henry Birks & Sons, dating to circa 1900. The substantial architectural case is crafted in black slate and arranged in the form of a classical temple, with a triangular pediment supported by six fluted columns. Gilt capitals, bases and finely applied gilt decoration to the pediment provide an elegant contrast against the deep black stone. The circular dial is signed Henry Birks & Sons and features an enamel chapter ring with stylized Arabic numerals, decorative gilt bezel and twin winding apertures. The clock is fitted with a quality French mechanical movement by Japy Frères, one of the best-known French clockmakers of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The rear movement plate is stamped Made in France and bears serial number 7479. The movement is spring driven and strikes the hour and half hour on a coiled gong, producing a clear, resonant tone. The clock has been inspected and observed to run and keep time. It has not been timed or tested for precise accuracy. Its symmetrical six-column design, restrained gilt ornamentation and substantial proportions give the clock a particularly strong architectural presence. It works equally well as a mantel clock, library or office clock, or as a decorative focal point in a traditional or classically inspired interior. The clock retains age-appropriate surface wear, minor marks and patination consistent with an antique object of this period. Please refer closely to the photographs for condition and details.
