About the Item

French mantel clock with cloisonné inlays Paris Gilt bronze, enamel, movement by E. Gaillot, Paris c. 1880 Dimensions: H 32 × W 23 × D 15 cm Description: Elaborately designed mantel clock in gilt bronze with finely modelled rocaille ornaments. The case stands on scrolled feet and is adorned in the lower section with colourful cloisonné enamel inlays featuring floral motifs in vivid blue, red and turquoise. The white enamel dial with Roman numerals is set before a neatly crafted anchor escapement movement. The backplate is stamped E. Gaillot, Fabt Paris. Background: The workshop of E. Gaillot was among the well-regarded Parisian makers of pendules and fine cases in the late 19th century. A characteristic feature is the combination of richly decorated bronze in the late Louis XV style with cloisonné enamel inlays, reflecting the taste of the second half of the 19th century. Condition: Bronze with authentic age patina and partial gilding. Enamel panels in fresh colours, without major losses. Movement complete and functional, not overhauled.

Made in France in the late nineteenth century it is formed of green onyx, porcelain (the vase on top), cloisonné enamel and ormolu. The dials are set upon three columns of ormolu, mounted on green onyx, and framed with enamel in red, white, and blue, floral motifs. The dials are adorned with lettering in both French and Spanish, and measure time, temperature, and pressure. An elegant decorative vase mounts the clock, crafted from porcelain, and similarly decorated with enamel elements.
