About the Item

A French white marble mantel clock of obelisk form with ormolu decorations in Louis XVI style. The enamel dial with Arabic numerals and pierced gilt hands is enclosed in a white marble obelisk case surmounted by a gilt moving armillary sphere finial symbolizing astronomy and universality. The front presents a panel chased with a relief of nymphs supporting a globe on which Cupid is standing holding a torch. A ribbon-tied drapery adorns the space below the dial while the sides feature urns issuing entwined laurel garlands, all characteristic ornamentation of Louis XVI classical style. Ormolu bands of beading run down the angles of the obelisk which is resting on a rectangular plinth on flattened bun feet adorned with rectangular reliefs of playful putti, itself supported by a rectangular grey marble base with ringed corner bollards on bun feet. Obelisks have been a recurring ornament in classical architecture since Ancient Roman times and illustrate the late 18th century’s interest in Egypt. This French 19th century Louis XVI obelisk mantle clock, with its delicate ormolu decoration dedicated to the goddess of love Venus, could beautifully complement a bookcase or create a unique display on a console table in any home.
