About the Item

An atmospheric English fusee dial clock, the face signed Kendal Milne & Co, Manchester. Once proudly marking the hours for one of Manchester’s most prestigious department stores, the dial now bears the layered patina of age — its painted Roman numerals and chapter ring softened by time, with rust and wear lending it the evocative quality of a rediscovered relic. As reclaimed by our buyer from a derelict building, it bares the scars of a hard life. Beautifully patinated with paint loss, scratches and rust. It has it's ebonised wooden surround, but with no bezel. The hands are beautifully cut steel, their once fine blue finish long succumbed to rust. Kendal Milne & Co, founded in 1836, became a landmark department store on Deansgate, later acquired by Harrods in 1919 and incorporated into the House of Fraser group in 1959. To this day, the name Kendals holds a special place in the city’s retail history. Though originally fitted with a traditional English fusee movement, this was mostly missing and has since been updated with a discreet quartz mechanism for reliability. Our clockmaker has skilfully fitted a quartz movement for ease and reliability, while retaining the beautiful original hands, hand washer and winding shaft. A hanging bracket is fitted to the rear. The result is a unique decorative piece that combines Manchester’s commercial heritage with the poetic atmosphere of something salvaged from an abandoned warehouse or derelict interior. A compelling blend of horological history and urban decay, this dial makes a striking statement for collectors of industrial, historical, or urbex-inspired design.
