About the Item

A large French Louis XV style gilt bronze cartel clock. After the model by Jacques Caffièri. The cartouche-shaped case representing sunrise and sunset, surmounted by a putto and doves in the Venus’ chariot above clouds in front of a large sunburst. The sides with scrolling foliage and the tapered lower part with a group depicting an astute man with an eagle. Circa: 1880 Height: 43" (107 cm) Width: 25" (63 cm) Jean-Jacques Caffieri (29 April 1725 - 22 June 1792) was a French sculptor. He was appointed sculpteur du Roi to Louis XV and later afforded lodgings in the Galeries du Louvre. He designed the fine rampe d'escalierwhich still adorns thePalais Royal. He is better known for his portrait busts, in terracotta or marble: his bust of Madame du Barry is at the Hermitage Mueseum, St Petersburg. He made a name with his busts of Pierre Corneille and Jean Racine for the foyer of the Comedie Francaise.
