About the Item

A period Louis XVI Ormolu Cartel Clock, also known alternatively as 'Cartel d'Alcove' or 'œil de bœuf Cartel d’Alcove' or bull's eye, the circular dial headed by a cockerel, within a fruiting oak-mounted case, the dial and pull quarter repeat movement both signed DeLorme A Paris. Such small wall clocks were often hung in the bed alcove next to the bed. The cockerel on top is a symbol of vigilance, alluding to both a role of protection over the sleep and alarm for waking up. This wonderful cartel clock characterizes the culmination of the neoclassical style in vogue from the 1760s on, with its pearls, ribbon and vegetation. The dial and movement are signed DeLorme in Paris, identifying it as the work from the prominent DeLorme family of Parisian clockmakers.
