About the Item

An elegant French Art Nouveau inkwell signed Louchet, Paris, combining finely cast gilt bronze with a richly patterned green marble base. Created around the turn of the 20th century, the piece reflects the refined craftsmanship and decorative sophistication associated with the Parisian luxury arts of the Belle Époque. The octagonal bronze inkwell is adorned with stylized floral and architectural ornament characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. Its domed hinged lid, crowned by a sculptural finial, opens to reveal the original ink reservoir. The gilt bronze surface retains a warm aged patina that enhances the depth of the decoration and emphasizes the quality of the casting. The substantial marble stand displays striking natural variations in green, black and grey tones, creating a strong visual contrast with the gilded bronze. Equally decorative and functional, this piece would have graced a distinguished writing desk, library or executive office and remains an attractive example of French decorative arts from around 1900. Dimensions: Width: 17 cm (6.7 in) Depth: 12.5 cm (4.9 in) Height: 12 cm (4.7 in) Condition: Very good antique condition. The gilt bronze retains an attractive original patina with expected signs of age. Minor chips and small losses are present along several marble edges and corners, consistent with age and use. Interior shows traces of historic ink oxidation. The underside is fitted with a later black velvet protective covering. (The photographs form an integral part of the description.)
