About the Item

Medallion mixed metal paper knife, ca 1890. Cruciform with silver profiles “hewn” from the irregular hand-hammered copper body. The “salvaged” version, based on the archaeological excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum, of the popular Classical pattern. Fully marked with maker’s stamp (Hayes & McFarland), phrase “Sterling & Other Metals”, and no. 40. Hayes & McFarland merged with two other makers in 1903 to form the Mt Vernon Silversmiths Company which, in turn, was acquired by Gorham in 1913.
