About the Item

A beautifully crafted Daum France pâte de verre art glass sculpture, depicting a delicate butterfly resting upon a rose leaf. Dating to approximately 1960–1980, this charming piece combines Daum's celebrated mastery of sculptural glass with a richly atmospheric palette of amber, amethyst and warm translucent tones. The butterfly is beautifully modelled, with carefully defined wings and body, perched naturally upon the curved surface of the rose leaf. The organic composition captures the delicate character of the subject while allowing the varied translucency of the glass to create depth and movement. The piece is executed in the distinctive pâte de verre technique, one of the most celebrated forms of French art glass. The resulting surface has a wonderfully tactile, softly textured appearance, with areas of translucent and opaque glass creating subtle variations in colour as light passes through the sculpture. The underside is script engraved “DAUM FRANCE”, confirming its association with the renowned French glassmaker. The signature is an integral part of the piece rather than a later reproduction or applied label. Its compact scale makes it exceptionally versatile. It can be displayed as a small sculpture or objet d'art on a desk, bookshelf, cabinet or coffee table, while its substantial glass construction also allows it to function beautifully as a decorative paperweight. Measurements Height: 6.4 cm (2½ in.) Width: 6.4 cm (2½ in.) Length: 8.9 cm (3½ in.) Weight: approximately 132 g Condition Pristine condition. No chips, cracks, scratches or other significant damage noted. The glass retains its original colour and surface quality. Presented without the original box. Pâte de Verre The French term pâte de verre, meaning “glass paste,” describes a distinctive technique in which finely crushed or powdered glass is placed into a mould and heated until the particles fuse together to form a solid glass object. The technique has ancient origins and was revived and refined by European glass artists during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. French makers subsequently developed pâte de verre into an important medium for highly sculptural and richly coloured works of art glass. Daum became particularly celebrated for its sophisticated interpretation of the technique, using carefully selected glass colours, translucency and moulding to create remarkably detailed botanical, animal and naturalistic subjects. A Charming Daum Objet d'Art This delicate butterfly and rose composition is an appealing example of Daum's naturalistic approach to pâte de verre, combining botanical and insect imagery with a luminous palette of amber and amethyst. An elegant addition to a collection of Daum, French art glass, pâte de verre or Art Nouveau-inspired decorative objects, and an especially attractive small-scale gift for the collector of fine glass.
