About the Item

An impressive and richly carved giltwood frame executed in the Baroque style, dating from the 17th century. The frame features exuberant scrolling acanthus leaves, volutes, and cartouche-shaped corner ornaments, characteristic of the dramatic and highly decorative aesthetics of the Baroque period. The deeply molded inner border is embellished with finely carved foliate motifs, while the broad outer molding displays bold sculptural relief, creating a striking interplay of light and shadow. Crafted from carved wood with original water-gilded and burnished surfaces, the frame retains a beautiful aged patina developed over centuries. The reverse reveals a traditional mitered construction, consistent with period craftsmanship. Visible wear to the gilding, age-related cracks, minor losses to the carving, and evidence of historic repairs attest to its authenticity and long history of use.
