About the Item

An art glass and bronze picture frame designed by Barovier & Toso. This is a very rare and amazing Torchon round picture frame created in Murano Venice by Barovier & Toso. The picture frame was made during the art deco period, circa 1935-1940 at the Barovier-Toso workshops in the Murano island. It was masterfully hand-crafted with parts made up in wheel cut clear art-glass, polished and gilt bronze, plated nickel and round glass. The technique used to achieve this rich twisted rope effect is called “Rigamenà” and requires a high level of skill on the part of the craftsmen. Fitted at the reverse with a concealed stand for display. Very rare decorative piece in great condition. The patina of the brass is original but this could be polished up if preferred and it could also easily be converted to a mirror. Rigamenà This is a traditional technique in Murano glassmaking method used to create twisted, ribbed, or spiral patterns on the surface of blown glass. By placing hot glass into a specialized ribbed mold - often called a molletta - and twisting it before blowing, artisans produce a dynamic, spiral texture that enhances light reflection. Barovier & Toso This is the world's oldest family-owned glass company, founded in Murano, Italy, in 1295. Known for inventing Venetian crystal in the 1400s, the company specializes in luxury, handmade Venetian glass lighting and art. It became officially known as Barovier & Toso in 1942 following a 1936 merger. Country: Venice, Murano, Italy. Period: Art deco, 1930-1940. Designer: Barovier-Toso. Soffiato glass charger plate designed by Salviati & Co. Great decorative piece, created at the Murano island in Venice Italy by the Salviati & Co. This flat charger was crafted during the art deco period back in the early 1920 by the blown glass process. Made up in transparent amber glass with the upper rim accented by a stripe made up from blue pate d verre. Soffiato Glassblowing or Soffiato in Italian, is a glass forming technique that involves inflating molten glass into a bubble with the aid of a blowpipe. A person who blows glass is called a glassblower, glassmith, or gaffer. The word come from soffietta, a tool used as a puffer to further inflate a vessel after it has been removed from the blowpipe and is attached to the pontil. It consists of a curved metal tube attached to a conical nozzle. The glassblower reheats the vessel, inserts the nozzle into its mouth so that the aperture is blocked, and then inflates the vessel by blowing through the tube. Salviati & Co. The company was founded by Antonio Salviati, which born in Vicenza in 1816 and died in Venice in 1890. In 1859, together with Enrico Podio and Lorenzo Radi he opened a glassware and mosaic boutique called Salviati Antonio...
