About the Item

Charming pair of engravings representing gallant scenes engraved by Jacques Firmin Beauvarlet after the works of Carle Van Loo. These two works are entitled Conversation espagnole and Lecture espagnole. In the Spanish Conversation, the scene is set in an architecture composed of large openings and columns. In this space, three women, a man and a dog move about. One of the women is standing and playing the guitar, the two other are sitting down, one of them, the older reading a book. In the Spanish reading, the scene takes place in nature. 3 characters are sitting, one man is facing two women. The man reads a book to the two women. The engraver Jacques Firmin Beauvarlet evolved in the 18th century. He is gifted in the representation of the flesh as it is visible in his work on the works of Van Loo, Nattier... Charles Van Loo is a French painter of the XVIIIth century. He travelled to Turin and Rome, where he studied drawing, painting and sculpture. He first became known for his trompe l'oeil paintings on ceilings. He then entered the Royal Academy of Sculpture and Painting, where he later became a professor. Like his rival François Boucher, he was supported by Madame de Pompadour. View Dimensions : H : 22,8 Inch W : 16,7 Inch.
