About the Item

Early 16th-century Lombard frame with a serrated pediment in carved wood, lacquered and gilded, with gilded wooden floral scrollwork inserts on a lapis lazuli-blue background, interspersed with 8 painted wooden high-relief sculptures depicting the heads of winged cherubs. It is in perfect condition despite its great age; it still retains its original patina, with only a few traces of cleaning at the top on the left side. These exquisite frames were commissioned by the greatest masters of the Renaissance from their trusted sculptors. Depending on the subject they were painting, artists specified certain characteristics regarding the carving and depth of the frame to enhance the lighting and perspective qualities of their works. It is therefore clear that the frame was intended to display a sacred subject by a painter of great renown. The distinct facial features of the cherubs in all eight sculptural representations attest to the great skill of the carvers, who were able to imbue the sculpted forms of the cherubs’ faces with great expressive power and realism. Even in the far upper corners of the interior, two hooks made of iron rod have been preserved; these held an iron bar onto which a black drape was rolled—a drape that had been draped over the artwork as a sign of mourning during the Pentecost season.
