Pair Antique Neoclassical Louis XVI Style Gilt Brass Gold Photo Picture Frames Continental Brass, glass Late 19th Century Dimensions: H x W: 20.5cm x 11.5cm (external) 16cm x 10cm (internal) A pair, these antique photo frames serve as reminders of a bygone era, their design celebrating the Neoclassical style. Neoclassicism emerged in the mid‑18th century as a return to the clarity, symmetry, and moral seriousness of antiquity, and in France it found its most elegant expression in the Louis XVI style. This courtly interpretation translated classical ideals into refined geometry, laurel wreaths, ribbon bows, and delicately balanced ornament motifs echoed beautifully in this pair of frames. By the late 19th century, such elements were revived once again as designers sought craftsmanship and classical order amid the eclecticism of industrial production. Both frames share an identical design, their borders crafted from pressed brass. The rectangular surrounds are adorned with a continuous beaded pattern, recalling ancient Greek and Roman mouldings. Each frame is crowned with a ribbon‑tied torch and quiver motif, a hallmark of the Neoclassical vocabulary. This “trophy” motif symbolises enlightenment, virtue, and the power of knowledge. The fronts are fitted with glass panes, while the reverse features a metal backing and a straight folding stand for display. Inside are antique photographs: one depicting a pair, the other a young boy. The first is signed “C. Risch‑Lau, Bregenz,” identifying the photographic studio in Bregenz, Austria. The second reads “Zum Andenken,” meaning “In remembrance” or “As a keepsake”—a common inscription from roughly 1880–1910, signalling that the portrait was intended as a sentimental memento, often gifted to relatives or close friends, but not necessarily connected to mourning. Rich in symbolic ornament and housing two evocative photographs likely originating in Austria, these frames may be used to display one’s own images or cherished exactly as they are.
