About the Item

This elegant abstract sculpture was created by the Italian artist Franco Berardo using polychrome Murano glass. This work is a fine example of the artist’s exploration of color, material, transparency, and sculptural form. The sculpture was created using a complex glassmaking process that combines the use of glass slabs with further refinement through submerged glass and blown glass techniques. The work fully captures Berardo’s sensitivity to light and materials, transforming glass into a vibrant, poetic, and deeply contemporary composition. The Murano glass mark is also visible on the glass slab, confirming its connection to the Venetian glass tradition. Within the composition, one can also see delicate gold leaf accents and small floral motifs, which enhance the surface and create a subtle interplay between ornamentation, transparency, and abstraction. With its strong visual impact, this technique embodies the spirit of modern abstract art, in which color and material take center stage as key expressive elements. Franco Berardo entered the world of Murano glass in the early 2000s, following a significant artistic career in painting and experimentation with fresco techniques, in which he became one of the most original and highly regarded practitioners. Over time, the artist felt the need to move beyond more traditional forms of expression, turning instead toward an increasingly abstract, refined, and undefined language. In Venetian glass, he found the ideal medium through which to further his artistic exploration. Working with some of the most renowned masters of Murano glassmaking, Berardo developed a highly personal technique. He personally creates his glass plates, which are then fused and, when necessary, blown or submerged. This process gives rise to works in which color, light, and form interact in perfect harmony. This sculpture beautifully captures this phase of his work, in which the historic tradition of Venetian artistic glass is reinterpreted through a contemporary and experimental lens. Throughout his career, Franco Berardo has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at public and private galleries. In 2012, he exhibited in the exhibition dedicated to submerged glass at the International Museum of Glass in Montegrotto Terme, Padua, and in the same year he won the 2012 Murano Prize in the Furnace category. In 2013, he presented a solo exhibition in China devoted exclusively to his Murano glass works at the Hangzhou International Design Festival. In December 2014, he once again won the Premio Murano in the Furnace category. The following year, Padua hosted the major retrospective exhibition “The Truth of Color.” “Works 1979–2014” at the San Gaetano Cultural Center. In 2016, one of his glass works was featured in the exhibition “Murano Oggi” at the Murano Glass Museum. A striking piece of art, perfect for contemporary interiors, elegant Murano glass collections, or sophisticated spaces where color, light, and materials take center stage.
