About the Item

Glazed ceramic plate by Pierre Martinon. Artist signature at the base. 1995. H : 1.2 x 9.6 x 9.8 inches. - A great work of art can often be recognized by the feeling of strangeness it awakens in us. Yet our memory, burdened with references, constantly suggests comparisons, as if the most urgent task were to escape the present impression. Discovery in art does not occur without a certain cultivated amnesia. Pierre Martinon is among those rare contemporary artists who have not renounced the creation of a style in favor of merely inventing a process. He is not particularly concerned with being recognizable, in whatever sense the word may be taken. And since he belongs to no school, no movement bearing a label, he works with a remarkable form of self-effacement. If the term were not so overused, one might speak of authenticity or purity. Pierre Martinon’s works were created without titles, even after their completion, and if they eventually receive one, it is only because social convention demands it. These forms, all deeply original, are strange without ever provoking unease, let alone anxiety. They belong to a world without humans and could, in a sense, exist on their own, as if they did not require our gaze. They display great virtuosity while always maintaining their balance. They harmoniously combine — something exceedingly rare in sculpture — strength and gentleness, clarity and mystery. This is why they reconcile a thoroughly modern sense of infinite freedom with the classical spirit that did not conceive of creation without rules and meticulous work. Pierre Martinon’s art challenges a famous phrase by Victor Hugo: “Form is the substance brought to the surface.” Christian Godin (Excerpt from La Revue de la Céramique et du Verre, No. 187, Nov–Dec 2012)
