About the Item

A rare model of what we believe is an adolescent turkey by the important American Animalier Sculptor, Albert Laessle. The dynamically modeled young bird is straining to scratch its back with wings outstretched and legs splayed slightly in stride. The cast is mounted on an original rouge marble base. Laessle spent the years from 1904-1907 working in Paris with Michel Beguine. It is easy to imagine an influence in this work from possible exposure the works of Rembrandt Bugatti and Rodin during this time. The bronze has a rich chocolate patina with some small spots of green oxidation. The integral plinth is marked for Laessle, Paris, 1907, and the Roman Bronze Works. Laessle's work is held in the Met, Peabody and Carnegie Institutes, PAFA, and found in public spaces. He was a student of Anshutz and Grafly, was a long-time instructor at PAFA, and was recognized in lifetime with major awards. Height: ca. 8 3/4 in. Bronze Height: ca. 7 1/4 in. Items purchased from David Sterner Antiques must delight you. Purchases may be returned for any reason for a period of 7 days.

Paul Comolera made his debut at the Salon in 1846 with a group called Golden Pheasants of China and continued to exhibit there until his death in 1897. Comolera’s bronzes...
